Jacobs, Durban

x. It is home to a number of factories, warehouses and businesses, and forms part of the Durban South Industrial Basin. The area is very sought after due to its close proximity to the Port of Durban. The port is a major hub for trade in the region, and many businesses are located nearby.  Jacobs is located near several major highways, making it easy to get around. The M7, N2 and N3 highways are nearby, providing quick access to other parts of the city. The area falls within zone 1 and 2 of the container cartage charge from the Port of Durban, thus charges for containers coming out of and into the port are at the cheaper rates prescribed by the transporters.

History

Jacobs is a historical centre of economic activity for the city as well as the province of KwaZulu Natal. Textile and manufacturing industries were located here as well as oil refineries, chemical producers and the paper industry. This provided significant employment opportunities. Due to recent restructuring Jacobs is now home to more logistics operators and fewer industrialists.
