Approximately 15km inland from the Durban CBD is the ever expanding, commercial hub of Westville. Originating as a farm and named in honour of the first British lieutenant-governor of Natal, Martin West – Westville was established in 1847. Developing from a smallish settlement of German settlers the town soon grew and was proclaimed a municipality in 1956. Previously an independent borough, it now forms part of the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality. Today Westville spans a total area of 30.76 km2 that is found between New Germany, Queensburgh and the Berea.
